Two years ago, the Law for Health and Life officially began its work as a research centre at the University of Amsterdam. We are proud to now share our first Report (2022–2024), capturing our journey from start-up to a place for research, education, and societal impact.

Against the backdrop of pandemic recovery, rapid digitalisation in healthcare, and the climate crisis, our centre has grown quickly. In this short time, we have:

  • Published more than 170 academic articles and op-eds
  • Tried and failed, but in the end secured over €2.4 million in external research funding
  • Renewed our Master in Health Law and interdisciplinary teaching at UvA
  • Built impactful collaborations with policymakers, NGOs, and health professionals
  • Hosted conferences and events on themes such as EU health governance, reproductive rights, and AI in healthcare

We are especially proud not only of our research outputs, but also of the service our team provides within the Amsterdam Law School and in society. Our members actively contribute to academic committees, professional associations, and public debates, ensuring that health law scholarship contributes to our wider academic community and societal challenges.

The report highlights our four research lines Health Innovations, Public Health, Legal Safeguards, and the Living Environment, as well as our expanding educational activities, from bachelor education to professional training. It also showcases the impact of our partnerships, including with Amsterdam UMC, GGD Amsterdam, and in international collaborations and consortia.

Looking ahead, we remain committed to building a healthier, more just, and sustainable society through law, education, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
