Dr. Mahsa Shabani of Law for Health and Life has been awarded a NWO Vidi grant for her research project "Fairness in Data-Driven Medical Technologies: Solidifying Regulatory Oversight Based on a Multidimensional Conception of Fairness".

Artificial intelligence and genomic technologies are transforming healthcare, offering powerful tools for diagnosis and treatment. Yet, these innovations often fail to serve diverse populations fairly, which can reinforce existing inequalities.

With her Vidi project, Shabani will develop a comprehensive framework for fairness in medical AI and genomics, integrating ethical, legal, and social perspectives. By engaging patients, clinicians, and policymakers, she aims to strengthen regulatory oversight and propose policy solutions that foster fair and responsible innovation.

Her findings will inform guidelines for inclusive and equitable AI in healthcare, ensuring that medical advancements benefit all individuals, regardless of their background.
