The research was led by Dr. James Hazel, a senior researcher at LCHL. The collaboration began after Lucie took the course Global Health and International Law and Ved completed the minor Health Technologies: Law and Bioethics, both taught by James.
Using interviews conducted by James with healthcare professionals working in emergency care, the research explored the role of AI in healthcare. Ved and Lucie were responsible for analysing the interviews using the qualitative analysis software ATLAS.ti. Working with a coding framework, they identified themes and patterns within the data and jointly developed and refined the project’s codebook.
A key part of the process was the close collaboration between Ved and Lucie. By discussing interpretations and comparing analyses, they worked towards a high level of consistency in their coding, which is essential for scientific research.
For Lucie, one of the most interesting aspects of the research was discovering how differently healthcare professionals viewed AI in clinical practice.

Ved also appreciated the opportunity to explore into topics introduced during the course and apply this knowledge in the context of real-world research.

Beyond the content of the study itself, both students valued the open and collaborative working environment. They appreciated the opportunity to contribute their own ideas throughout the process and to experience academic research from start to finish.

The research is currently being considered for publication in a journal connected to the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine.
Following the project, Ved will continue with a Master’s degree in Law and Finance at the University of Amsterdam. Lucie plans to pursue a bridging programme to obtain civil effect qualifications and is considering a future career as a Dutch lawyer.
