  • Profile

dr. Nina de Groot joined the Law Centre for Health and Life in September 2026. Her research focuses on genomic data use; by bringing together insights from bioethics, digital ethics, and law, she explores concerns at the level of individuals, groups, and society at large.

Her PhD project, entitled ‘The Shared Self: Genomic Information between Bioethics, Data Ethics, and Politics’, was funded by an individual ‘PhDs in the Humanities’ grant of the Dutch Research Council (NWO). A central topic in her research is law enforcement use of commercial DNA data and its ethical, legal, and social-political implications. After obtaining her PhD, she worked as a researcher at the Leiden University Medical Center, where she was also a member of the Institutional review board on biobank research. Before starting her PhD research, she worked as a medical doctor in Psychiatry at Amsterdam University Medical Centre.

Her work is published in multiple (inter)national journals, such as Big Data & Society, Journal of Medical Ethics, Digital Society, Tijdschrift voor Gezondheidsrecht, and Nederlands Juristenblad. She also presented her research findings in the public debate, including in Nieuwsuur, NRC, and Met het Oog op Morgen.
